World-class training for the modern energy industry

The UK Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) GeoNetZero (GNZ) and the GeoLogica GeoEnergy Transition (GET) Programme – a natural partnership

The UK’s Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in GeoNetZero (GNZ) and GeoLogica are delighted to announce further collaboration in training for geoscience doctoral students. The newest link-up between the two organisations will strengthen their partnership to provide valuable learning opportunities for a new generation of students specialising in the energy transition.

The initial funding has been matched by industry sponsors of the GNZ CDT to create a £6M program of research and training. GeoLogica is adding value to the training program by granting the CDT access to courses that will help the CDT students broaden and deepen their skill sets and experience relating to the energy transition.

GeoLogica’s GeoEnergy Transition (GET) programme was launched at the end of April 2021 and the inaugural course on critical minerals has been successfully presented by Lucy Crane of Cornish Lithium. GeoLogica looks forward to welcoming the current and future CDT student cohorts on to its upcoming courses on subjects such as carbon capture and storage, geothermal systems, mineral exploration and more.

John Underhill, The Academic Executive Director of the GNZ CDT said: “I am very excited about the link up with GeoLogica. The partnership will enable our GeoNetZero CDT students to receive tuition from and interface with world-leading experts. It promises to be a unique learning, teaching and training experience that will introduce students to the leading edge of research to address the challenges associated with the energy transition and ambition to reach net zero emission targets.”

Simon Baker, Managing Director of GeoLogica, commented: “GeoLogica is excited to be working in the area of the energy transition. Geoscience will play a crucial role in de-carbonizing the energy industry and we are very pleased to be working alongside the CDT to help train geologists of the future.”

The new GeoEnergy Transition training programme from GeoLogica

Since its inception in 2019, GeoLogica has wanted to develop training for the imminent and vital transition towards net-zero carbon energy. Despite a global pandemic creating a few bumps along the way, we are delighted to announce today the release of a programme of courses that address this need.

At GeoLogica, we define the GeoEnergy Transition (or GET) as:

“The application of geoscience to achieve a net-zero carbon energy system.”

And the earth sciences and geoscientists are key to this shift in energy provision.

We have engaged with a new cohort of experts and practitioners in these topics, many of whom are acknowledged leaders in their chosen fields, and we look forward to working with them. The courses offered represent a broad examination of the interface between geoscience and the energy transition, and cover technical topics, such as carbon capture and storage, geothermal energy, critical mineral resources, as well as the socio-economic aspects that must also be addressed. We believe that this represents the first comprehensive and publicly available GeoEnergy Transition programme, and we will be adding even more courses over the coming months.

GeoLogica is fortunate to count many well-known and highly respected geologists among its advisors, tutors and friends, and we hope that our GET programme will find a ready audience among geoscientists and engineers, as well as many others who require a deeper understanding of the technologies, methods and issues facing the energy industry over the coming decades.

GeoLogica and the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Oil and Gas

GeoLogica are excited to announce that we will be working with the National Environmental Research Council Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) to provide training to their cohorts of students engaged in energy-related projects.

The key aim of the NERC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), led by Academic Director John Underhill and based at Herriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, is to develop broader knowledge and deeper skill sets in their postgraduate geoscience students beyond the demands of their individual projects. Research degrees demand adaptability and self-application but the specific technical skills may not directly transfer to the requirements of the workplace. Amongst geoscientists, this workplace has commonly been the oil and gas industry, where new methodologies, skills and workflows must be learnt before new staff can become fully productive members of a team. The CDT in Oil and Gas was set up in 2014 to develop these skills and the programme has been highly successful, with the vast majority of graduating students finding employment in the industry.

The collaboration between GeoLogica and the CDT has been announced by them to industry sponsors and higher education partners with the following press release from John Underhill below:

GeoLogica teams up with the NERC CDT in Oil & Gas

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Oil and Gas is delighted to announce that it has entered into partnership with a leading training provider, GeoLogica.

The agreement enables the PhD students to participate in GeoLogica’s extensive suite of online courses as part of the CDT’s Geological Society accredited training program.

Welcoming the agreement, the CDT’s Academic Director, Professor John Underhill, said: “The mission of the CDT is to help build the next generation of geoscientists. The link up with GeoLogica will not only give our students access to world-leading training but it will allow them to develop, hone and sharpen their skills and expertise for future careers in industry, as part of the energy transition.”

Dr Neil Harbury, one of GeoLogica’s founders and Principal Advisor said: “We are delighted to be associated with the CDT. In partnering with it, we are recognising the outstanding success of the program and the way in which the CDT is pioneering doctoral training in the UK.”

We are really looking forward to working with NERC CDT management and its students to help build the geoscientists of the future.

GeoLogica 2021 Program and Update

GeoLogica’s initial 2021 program release consists of 21 Live Online Courses of varying duration – from short 6-hour fundamental and masterclasses, to full-length courses of up to 36 hours of training.

It has been a bumpy ride this year for the industry and the world at large. With the promise of at least one vaccine becoming available in the very near future, this turbulence will hopefully abate as we move into 2021. Looking forward to less challenging times, GeoLogica has been busy building a robust geoscience training program. Working closely with our contacts in the industry and our world-leading tutors, we have designed a program that addresses the industry’s needs for a combination of online training and some action in the field later in the year.

Our initial release consists of 21 Live Online Courses of varying duration – from short 6-hour fundamental and masterclasses, to full-length courses of up to 36 hours of training. To mitigate “screen fatigue” for all concerned, our Live Online Courses are taught in sessions limited to around 4 hours per day and we have also taken care to schedule our courses to be convenient for both US and EU attendees.

We are cautiously planning for a small program of field courses in the US and in the EU in 2021 and have provisional dates for 7 field courses. They will be subject to prevailing Covid travel restrictions and we will provide regular updates on the status of these in the coming months. Full refunds will be available if a field course is cancelled or if participants are unable to attend alternative dates.

As ever, we are on hand to provide customized training for individual companies. Our small team are able to work quickly and dynamically to develop courses and programs to suit companies’ needs and budgets.

We are developing more courses and we will be releasing updates as the program matures over the next few weeks, as well as announcing our plans for helping to educate business on the low and net-zero carbon economy – stay tuned for developments!

In more personal company news, we are really pleased to welcome two new members to our team:

Henry Mellors has joined GeoLogica to be our dedicated Health and Safety representative, responsible for ensuring both the HSE compliancy of prospective courses and the safe and smooth conduct of ongoing field courses a Field Safety Officer. A recent graduate with an honour’s degree in Outdoor and Adventure Education, his multidisciplinary training included group management, journey planning, technical rope skills and risk management, in addition to providing him with critical experience in a variety of outdoor settings in the UK and abroad.

Dave Waters has 25 years’ experience in industry geoscience – from majors to intermediates and small independents, and from the technical “coal-face” to team leadership roles. His current focus for us at GeoLogica will be to head up our GeoEnergy Transition training. More on this is to be announced soon but we are excited to be adding this category of training to our portfolio. Dave’s expertise in the field of energy decision making and his passionate interest in the future of geoscience in the coming energy transition, makes him the perfect person to push forward our vision of applying geoscience training to achieve a net-zero energy system.

With two new team members and a new 2021 program to shout about, all of us at GeoLogica are feeling positive about the future.

GeoLogica Launch Event, January 21, 2020

Our launch event was held at 2314 Dunlavy St, Houston, and we were excited to be able to celebrate the unveiling of our 2020 program with such a fantastic group of company representatives, GeoLogica tutors and GeoLogica staff and advisors.

The aim of the event was not just to celebrate with our industry friends, but to raise awareness of our program in an informal atmosphere.

Our 2020 program has been designed to cover a broad range of core geoscience competencies and we aim to deliver the necessary knowledge for both less-experienced geoscientists and experienced staff who require specialized skills. As you’d expect, all course content and dates have been discussed and agreed with the tutors, who are very pleased to be working with us!

GeoLogica strongly believes in the benefits of field-based training so a significant proportion of our portfolio is composed of field classes. The benefits are both tangible (understanding of scale, the limits of resolution of subsurface data, the heterogeneity of real rocks and asset team development) and less tangible (industry networking and ideas exchange, staff satisfaction and well-being) but the outcomes in terms of staff performance are unquestionable.

There was much positive discussion around the program at the launch event and everyone left with a better understanding of what GeoLogica offers, as well as a warm glow from all the delicious canapés that had been eaten!

We look forward to the next GeoLogica event – come and find us at AAPG ACE in June!

2020 Course Launch

GeoLogica’s 2020 courses are now scheduled and available for online bookings.

GeoLogica are pleased to announce that their full program of courses for 2020 is now available and the on-line booking system is now live!

It is a stimulating suite of courses and we are glad to be sharing this robust and broad program. It has been designed to address the needs of a variety of oil and gas operators and we are looking forward to working with an elite group of world-class instructors who will be delivering the courses for us. All have experience of working within or for the oil and gas industry and therefore have a deep understanding of relevant issues within their chosen fields. A significant proportion of our courses are also conducted in the field as we think that the experience of observing real rocks is fundamental in understanding the complexities and heterogeneities present in the subsurface.

The courses are primarily focussed on key areas of geoscience critical to understanding subsurface oil and gas habitats. In total, we have 33 scheduled courses and have divided them into seven discipline areas to help you find the courses you require, these are:

  • Basin Analysis (broadly basin- and exploration-scale topics, including prospect analysis, sequence stratigraphy and petroleum systems analysis)
  • Depositional Systems (covering the majority of both clastic and carbonate depositional environments)
  • Geophysics (from the fundamentals, through interpretation methods to advanced AVO courses)
  • Evaluation Methods (log analysis, reservoir engineering and allied courses)
  • Reservoir Characterization (principally concerned with reservoir-scale topics, including depositional, structural and geophysical aspects)
  • Structural Geology (a suite of courses that cover the principal tectonic regimes and deformation styles, from fundamental to more specialized topics)
  • Resource Plays (structural, engineering and petroleum systems aspects, along with examination of some key formations and play systems)

As well as providing a good choice of classroom and field courses, we have endeavoured to keep our costs as low as practicable, while retaining the highest levels of tuition and health and safety, so we are confident that GeoLogica can address your geoscience training needs.

GeoLogica aim to provide a new, engaging and considered approach to geoscience training and look forward to helping train, develop and motivate geoscientists in a challenging and exciting future for the energy industry.
